LAW LISTS
(as of 24 March 1994)
by
Lyonette Louis-Jacques
Copyright 1994
Below are lists related to law on the Internet with instructions for
subscribing to them included. Lists on CompuServe, ABA/net, Counsel
Connect, and other such services have been omitted. Note: To
subscribe, send your request to LISTSERV or MAILSERV or LISTSERVER or
MAILBASE or LISTPROC or [list-name]-REQUEST or MAJORDOMO as indicated, and
replace "Your Name", "firstname lastname", etc., with your real name;
leave the subject line blank, and only include the single line
subscription request in the body of the message (do not include any
other information in the message, not even your .sig, unless otherwise
instructed).
Also note that most lists have "-L" appended to their names (as in
cyberia-l; that is the letter "L" and not the number "one"),
and list addresses tend to use the number "one" and not the
letter "L" (so in "@vm1.spcs.umn.edu", that is vm "one", and in
"@uminn1.bitnet", that is uminn "one").
Sample subscription:
If Toshiro Mifune wanted to subscribe to the
INT-LAW@vm1.spcs.umn.edu list, he'd send the following message (to
LISTSERV and NOT to INT-LAW):
To: LISTSERV@vm1.spcs.umn.edu
Cc:
Subject:
Message:
subscribe int-law Toshiro Mifune
Within minutes, he'd get back a message from the LISTSERV software
telling him that he has successfully subscribed to the INT-LAW list,
and giving him instructions for unsubscribing/signing off, reviewing a
list of the subscribers to the list, etc. Once the LISTSERV software
has processed his subscription command, he can then send to and receive
messages directly from INT-LAW subscribers.
It is very easy to subscribe to lists, and very easy to sign off
if you find out that a list is not for you (unless the list is
manually run or otherwise requires human intervention, instead of a
computer to unsubscribe you; then there might be some delay in getting
unsubscribed). It is important to retain instructions for
unsubscribing from a list or temporarily postponing receipt of list
messages while on vacation; otherwise, unwanted mail piles up, a very
frustrating experience!
Most lists allow you to unsubscribe or signoff the same way you
subscribed with one major difference--you leave off your name. So, to
get off a list, you'd send the following form of message to the
LISTSERV, LISTPROC, MAJORDOMO or whatever name the software has:
unsubscribe [listname]
Some lists also use "signoff" or "uns". That is if you used
"subscribe" to sign on to the list in the first place. If you used
"join" as with MAILBASE lists, you use the command "leave" in order to
unsubscribe. On one list, "add" is used to subscribe and "remove" to
unsubscribe. But "unsubscribe" and "signoff" are the most popular
ways, but send the message to the software that runs the list and not
to the list itself (e.g. to LISTSERV and not to INT-LAW). So, if
Toshiro Mifune wanted to get off the INT-LAW@UMINN1.BITNET list, he'd
send the following message:
To: LISTSERV@UMINN1.BITNET
Cc:
Subject:
Message:
unsubscribe int-law
But, as lists do have variations in how to unsubscribe, keep the
instructions you got upon subscribing handy!
As the number of law-related lists increases, the need to choose
lists well and manage the flow of information increases. Some lists
enable you to receive a "digest" of list messages; this is useful for
"heavy traffic" lists with a large amount of messages each day. You
get the messages with a summary of topics covered first, followed by
the full text of messages with the bulk of the routing/queueing
information stripped out, as one message. Reduces length and number
of messages received. Another way to handle the information load is
to subscribe instead to the Usenet newsgroup for the list (some of the
lists below have Usenet gateways; ask your local computer guru for
help in identifying listservs that are also Usenet newsgroups). Also,
there are lists that allow non-subscribers to post messages, so you
don't have to subscribe to that list in order to post your question on
it (you're not getting unwanted messages in the meantime). The
downside of this is that the non-subscriber who posts a question does not
receive responses to the question that are directed to the list. When
posting to lists you don't belong to, always indicate that, and
instruct subscribers to send replies directly to your e-mail address
and not to the list. Sharing responsibility for monitoring lists is
another good way to manage e-mail (your colleague on another list can
forward messages of interest to you and you can do likewise for the
lists that you are on for them). And, of course, you can always
unsubscribe from lists that have more "noise" than relevant information.
Hopefully the law-related electronic mailing lists below will be
useful for your work. Happy networking!
Permission for electronic dissemination of "Law Lists" is
granted. Reproduction of "Law Lists" in hardcopy/print format for
